Remote Sensing in Geology. Generates Mineralogy Sensitive Color Composite Imagery

Image
Color composites generation workflow which emphasizes to mineral (clay, iron oxide, and ferrous minerals) distribution over wide area. This workflow can be applied to Landsat-8 or Landsat-9 imagery. Similar workflow also can be done for Sentinel-2 MSI imagery. Workflow can be applied to Level-1 data, and the most optimal is applied to the surface reflectance level data. Key interpretation about color and mineralogy association: 1. Reddish color = ferrous minerals 2. Greenish color = clay minerals 3. Bluish color = iron oxide minerals

RADAR SAR IMAGERY MULTITEMPORAL RGB COLOR COMPOSITES GENERATION IN ESA SNAP

Image
How to generate RGB composites of Multi-temporal SAR Radar Imagery in ESA SNAP. Multi-temporal SAR Imagery is very useful to monitor the landuse and landcover dynamic over time. This data could also be useful for Image Classification or Image Segmentation from SAR Data. RGB composites of SAR data are not the same as RGB composites of Optical Imagery Data. The color information of SAR Color composite doesn't represent the electromagnetic response of land cover. It is more represents the gradual changes of radar backscatter response at different times.

Exploring Auto Generated Sentinel-2 Imagery Color Composites using ESA SNAP

Image
All remote sensing users must be familiar and used to playing with multispectral bands combination to get certain information from imagery. If you are deeply understand about spectral response curve of surface earth objects, you will know that certain object (vegetation for example) gaves different spectral response compared to another objects. For satellite imagery consist of more than 3 bands (RGB in digital camera), different bands combination in RGB planes gaves different emphasizes to landcover colors in the imagery. Hence they are called multispectral imagery. Most of low to medium resolution imaging satellite currently operational in the earth orbit are multispectral, like landsat, modis, noaa avhrr, and many others.  Multispectral imagery number of bands can range from 4 bands to dozens bands, but not reaching hundreds. When the bands number reached more than one hundred bands it is called hyperspectral imagery and its analysis and image processing workflow would be pretty ...

Atmospheric Rayleigh Scattering Correction of Sentinel 2 Imagery using ESA SNAP

Image
The availability of multiple processing levels of satellite imagery products, either in the free or commercialized domain, by multi-national government agencies or private companies has made imagery utilization for many applications easier than ever.  Take Sentinel-2 imagery as an example, it is been delivered to the public as multi-level data products. You can get L1c products that only radiometric and geometrically corrected, or higher level L2a which the data has been processed to reflectance unit, furthermore it is already atmospherically corrected. So we don't talk about Top of Atmosphere reflectance anymore, we talk about surface reflectance.  However, all this easiness should not make us became lazy person alright?. It is important that remote sensing users know how to do atmospheric correction either in the practical or theoretical domain. Without deep knowledge of remote sensing theories, all of your image processing and analysis skills cant be trusted in order to get...

DEM Creation from Sentinel 1 Imagery using SAR Interferometry Approach (Video Tutorial)

Image
DEM ( Digital Elevation Model ) extraction is one of popular topic in GIS and Remote Sensing. There are so many ways and methods to produce a DEM. You can use survey data in points format then interpolate it to became raster DEM, or using contour lines to generate DEM. Almost every GIS and Remote Sensing can do this kind of analysis. The better approach and yielding a better result is using Photogrammetry techniques. For photogrammetry, you needs satellite imagery or aerial photographs that has image overlap between flight line that later can be opened together in a photogrammetric software, and then from the overlaps, height and elevation information could be reconstructed and sampled together in their respective grids, and finally a DEM has been created.  Recent development of survey technology has introduce us to LIDAR technology that enabling us to get a DEM in superfine resolution and covering large area. UAV technology is also progressed so much even photogrammetry survey can...

Geometric Correction Envisat ASAR Data Using ESA SNAP

Image
ENVISAT is the flagship earth observation satellite of the European Union from 2000 to 2010. It brings a huge number of payloads and sensors. The most well-known are AATSR, ASAR, and MERIS. ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) is the continuation of the ERS1-ERS2 satellites which operate in the nineties to early 2000. The satellite now has been decommissioned due to communication problems, but the data is still considered precious because it is recording the earth phenomena in the last decade.  ENVISAT ASAR data has been available for the public, however, its access right now is quite limited due to EU rules. ENVISAT ASAR data comes in with a wide range of data formats, and all of them are supported to read and process in ESA SNAP Software. So if you have access to ENVISAT ASAR, I advise using ESA SNAP if you want to get maximum benefits of the data. Nonetheless, other SAR Software can also process this data. Recently I have access to the data and I start to play around with th...

Vector Tile (Basemap Series Part 3)

Image
My two previous posts concerned about tile layers served as basemap in raster format. Tile layer in raster format is superb because it is deliver fast reading, great compatibility between systems and standards, Tile layer in raster format is also works for any kind of data and independent from the source data format. Either you have thematic maps in vector format or satellite imagery/DEM in raster format, Tile layer in raster could handle them well. But technology always changing. In recent years, development of tile layer in vector format got its fruition. It is somewhat better than raster, but it is not dedicated to replace the raster based tiles. It has specific function which is mainly to serve basemap in VECTOR format. By using vector format, you can get : 1. Smaller file size to serve, so higher performance is guaranteed. 2. Dynamic and good resolution/display in every scale or zoom level (vector ftw man). 3. Faster generation and processing time compared to raster. 4. No...

DEM Interferometri Menggunakan Sentinel 1 SAR Data (Eksperimen)

Image
Meskipun beberapa praktek teknis Radar seperti pembuatan komposit multipolarisasi, geocoding...

Download Landsat 8 Data Using SnapSat.Org

Image
A new landsat-8 data provider has been added Using simple interface you can straightforwardly download landsat-8 data either just some bands or full dataset. This portal utilizing Amazon S3 free access Landsat-8 repository, so it will have some data acquisition delay compared with official USGS repository (EarthExplorer, GLOVIS, REVERB). Based on the test I conducted, I think data access thru this portal is greatly useful if you just need some quicklook or visual interpretation needs. Oh btw, Landsat-8 data obtained from this portal is reprojected to Web Mercator Projection, so if you need the data in UTM or Geographic Projection, just reproject it using ArcGIS, QGIS or other Geospatial softwares.

Download Landsat 8 Data Using Libra Development Seed

Another platform to download Landsat-8 Data No login and registration needs, more intuitive than Glovis/EarthExplorer

How to open ALOS CEOS Format in ArcGIS 10.x

Image

Importance of Geoid Offset In Orthorectification

Image

Orthorectify Aerial Photographs (Part 2. Orthorectify Aerial Photographs Using ENVI)

Image

Orthorectify Aerial Photographs (Part 1. Nature of Aerial Photographs Geometric Distortion)

Image

TUTORIAL ORTHOREKTIFIKASI CITRA SATELIT RESOLUSI SEDANG (CITRA ASTER)

Image
